To those who reside in Klahanie’s Lake Point division, mention of the presence of the “candy lady” will surely trigger a mysterious grin and subtle smile that only makes the asker want to know more. At the heart of this circulating myth is an elderly woman residing in the Lake Point division who gives free candy and other snacks to any kid who rings on her doorbell. She is so popular that her garage has literally been converted into a candy and drinks warehouse.
How can anything this good be true? According to neighbors, the candy lady began giving out candy to children around 20 years ago, making her now one of the oldest residents of Lake Point. Her altruistic rationale for these acts of kindness is simply making children happy and seeing new faces everyday.
However, there are rules set in place to ensure that nobody decides to exploit her generosity and drive up expenses exponentially. Each kid can only visit her home once a day and every other day at most. Furthermore, children 13 and under are restricted to less free food than those over age 13.
Refreshments offered include large-sized candies such as fruit by the foot, small-sized candies such as tootsie rolls, drinks, and ice cream.
But what’s most important is what the candy lady has meant for Lake Pointers and outsiders fortunate enough to have inside information disclosed to them. To Beaver Lake Middle School track and cross-country athletes, taking a short detour to seek refreshments from the candy lady is often bragged about and occasionally carried out. Many Lake Pointer kids also confess to seeing the candy lady at the maximum rate allowed by the rules she has laid down. The candy lady at Lake Point is truly a great example of selflessness for the sake of others’ happiness at its finest.
